The 4th Japanese Culture Workshop "Karuta Experience" was held
On Thursday, January 23, 2025, the 4th Japanese Culture Workshop for international students, “Karuta Experience”, was held and 17 international students and researchers participated.
This event was held jointly with SUMS's Competitive Karuta Cirlcle. After a 10-minute lecture of competitive karuta by the circle representative Hara Shihori (3rd year, School of Nursing), a demonstration was given with Nakamura Takeshi (3rd year, School of Medicine) to show how the game is played and the techniques used by the players. In the second half of the event, the participants used an English version of Hyakunin Isshu cards and enjoyed playing in groups of 4 or 5.
Some participants were already familiar with Hyakunin Isshu through the manga and anime “Chihayafuru.” They appeared captivated by the powerful demonstration before them and the glimpse into Japanese literature offered by the English translations of the waka poems.
